There are two wonderful books I can think of off the top of my head. Both of these, I first read in my 20s, and I fell in love with them. But they would have been just as good to me when I was 13:

Anthem by Ayn Rand (This one is a short read. About a teenage boy in a futuristic society where the government is opressive and makes laws contrary to the human spirit. Very intelligent book, it will make you cry like a baby, but it doesn't have a bad ending. You can read this one online at the following link)

The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis (this is a short book. it's basically correspondence between two demons, a master and his fledgeling.)

Very nice to see a young person who is interested in reading.

Be well.

edit:

Couple of great movies:

The Color Purple (simultaneously heartbreakingly sad, sexy, hilariously funny, good ending. This is a Steven Spielberg movie. Has Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover, Rae Dawn Chong, Laurence Fishburne, Margaret Avery, Adolph Caesar).

Diary of a Mad Black Woman (not against white people; funny as hell, you will still be laughing weeks later; has Christian characters but is still realistic, still has cursing and outrageous behaviour)

I would normally only recommend these movies to adults, but I figure a 13 year old girl who is actually interested in reading, is probably mature enough to handle mature subject matter.

The Perfect man is a good novel and movie. You might like Stick it, the novel So B. It, and I loved The Wedding Planner's daughter. It's a good book that's kinda short.

read the book the Uglies and the Prettys. They may seem pretty big, but they are very good. I couldn't put them down!
Movie wise, watch Pride and Prejudice, Pirates of the Carrabean, and The Lake House

Have you read the Judy Blume books? I always liked them growing up, but they may be too young for you. I'm not familiar with many books in your age range. Sorry!
