--Changing a transmission on a motorcycle is not like a car.
--You don't just unbolt the old one and install the new one.
--The entire engine has to be disassembled. As in, remove the engine from the frame, then remove every nut, bolt and component until you have a big box of parts!
--You probably wasted your money buying a transmission. The gears themselves, hardly ever go bad. Like "rc" said, the shift forks get worn and won't move the gears enough to engauge with each other.
--BUY A SHOP MANUAL - this is not a job for a backyard mechanic.

--You want directions, OK
--Remove L&R side covers
--Remove clutch, flywheel, stator, starter motor, starter clutch, shift shaft, shift linkage, oil pump, water pump, primary drive gear, all crankcase bolts (top & bottom), seperate bottom crankcase from top case, clean all gasket surfaces until they look brand new, slide out shift fork "shafts", remove shift forks, remove transmission.
--You're going to need some special tools (you can't get them at Sears or Home Depot) and you'll need torque specs to put the motor back together.
