www.avast.com : 94% detection, includes web Antivirus and other features too
www.grisoft.com : 86% , includes other features but has shown poor results in last month rating.
www.activevirusshield.com : 99%, powerd by Kaspersky. but only includes file and mail antivirus, nothing else.
these are the only free and safe selections
commercial ones inclute the best as prevx1 and Kaspersky giving 99% detection

To composepro, if you read the site correctly (which obviously you didn't), it says that AVG Free 7.1 will no longer be supported. As it has been replaced with AVG Free 7.5. They are asking all current users of AVG Free 7.1 to upgrade to version 7.5. AVG Free is very much alive and supported in version 7.5. As of next year version 7.1 will no longer be receiving updates, that's why they want everyone to upgrade to 7.5 for the latest protection and to continue receiving definition updates.
So far I have only seen offers for AVG. While that's okay, there's certainly nothing wrong with AVG there are other options, some would say, other better options so I'm just going to run down the list of all the free versions that I know of.
You already know about AVG, http://free.grisoft.com/ it's probably the best known free anti-virus but it is also not the most effective free anti-virus out there.
Avast is another one, http://www.avast.com/ I don't like avast because you have to re-register every year, not a big deal but it just bothers me.
Anti-Vir, this is my favorite one. In fact, Anti-Vir scored highest on most tests compared to either AVG or Avast. Anti-Vir had more accurate detection and fewer false positives than either AVG or Avast. It would be my pick as the most accurate.
There is also an offering by AOL. I know, I know... AOL but don't worry, AOL didn't run out and develop their own, they contracted out Kaspersky to make it for them. The AOL Active Virus Shield is powered by Kaspersky, which makes one of the very best paid anti-virus and you are more or less getting that protection without some of the fancy settings for free, http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp? but I think you should know I had trouble with this one, it seemed to conflict with my firewall and I'm still figuring that one out. Still, if you install it and it works without problems then this would be my pick above all the others.
Clamwin AV, http://www.clamwin.com/component/option,com_frontpage/Itemid,1/ free and open source anti-virus for Windows, however, it is not an active scanner, it is only an on-demand scanner, meaning it will not prevent infections, only remove them after the fact. All the others in this list have a real time engine to prevent infections. I do not reccomend Clamwin as your primary protection, however it comes in handy if the scanner you have isn't dectecting something. It is useful because it won't conflict with the other programs because of the lack of the real time protection.
There you have it, those are all the free anti-virus applications I can think of.
But... don't forget your anti-spyware in the forms of:
Windows Defender, http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Spybot, http://www.safer-networking.org/
Adaware, http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Spyware Blaster, http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
and last but not least
Advanced Windows Care (which performs system tweaks, cleans the registry, deletes junk files and protects agains spyware infections), http://www.download.com/Advanced-WindowsCare/3000-2086-10407614.html
Oh yeah, don't forget a firewall as well (the one built into Windows is no good):
Either Zone Alarm, http://www.zonelabs.com/ or Comodo Personal Firewall, http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ or the Sygate Personal Firewall, http://www.simtel.net/product.download.mirrors.php?id=53687 will do the trick. My personal choice is the Sygate Personal Firewall but Zone Alaram is easier to use for new/novice users. Comodo falls somewhere in the middle, not the hardest to use but not the easiest either. Pick whichever you like. Make sure to turn of the Windows Firewall after you have it installed (note Zone Alarm will do that for you, the others will not).
