The most common opal are the milky white ones with flecks of color like pink/blue, or 'opalessence'. There is also a mexican fire opal white is orange. Sometimes an alternative birthstone for October is the pink tourmaline which is whatyou might be talking about.

Depending on the quality of the opal depends on the amount of "fire" you get out of the stone. It is mostly an "opalescent" white or cream color with flecks of pink, blue, gold, and sometimes other colors. There is an old wives tale that says if you wear an opal and it isn't your birthstone you will lose the stone and then have a run of bad luck. Don't know how much truth there is to that, the opal is not my birthstone and 25 years ago this Christmas my husband gave me an opal bracelet and I still have my husband and the opal bracelet. Hope this helps with your argument.

Opal comes in many different types. The birthstone is just the plain white/cream with the flakes of multi colors when it relfects light so I believe.

Well opals are kind of whitish and irridescent with varying colors that show through, for instance blue and gold. I really don't think pink is the predominant color.

It's my birthstone and I love it!!

Opals have white backgrounds with luminescent streaks or flecks of green, pink, or gold.
