.....since the U.S. is about the only place just about any woman can do it. How many of you carry a gun? How many of you have or are currently considering or have considered doing so? If you don't and haven't, do you know any women that do or are considering it? And why any of you think it is or isn't a good idea to do so (men and women).

without saying what my opinion is on this, I'd like to know where these statistics that show you are more likely to be shot if you carry a gun come from. Can't find them, myself.

I'll add that I'm aware that the crime rate is very low in Australia and a lot of other countries, and that makes this question less relevant in those. But in the U.S., a lot of our cities are dangerous as hell, and some women have little choice but to be in them - some, most, or all of the time. It's those women I want to hear from. I live in the sticks now. Only carry a gun to hunt with. Used to live in the city, though. Guess I will betray how I feel now. Think there are a lot of statistical manipulations and downright bogus studies on this issue -fact is, chose your sources carefully and you can PROVE any side of this argument that you want to. For my part, I don't really care which ones are correct. I don't care how many yo-yo's have had their gun taken away and used on them. They are dopes or they hestitiated or they never took the time to get good with it, or develop the necessary mindset to use it.

It's better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have it

In fairness to the above person...It is true that the Aus police do not carry guns and that the crime rate is very low...however....every woman who lives or works in the bush have or DO carry a gun.

I have carried a gun on hunting, camping, fishing, scouting trips for years. Would i carry one in the city? I would hope i would have enough common sense to stay out of any part of the city where I might need to carry a gun but if i felt the need to have one, sure, why not.

I don't use/own a gun, though have delighted at scoring well at boardwalk games.
My family members have owned guns (one always under the pillow), and as a child dad told me, "if the house is broken into or you hear a skuffle during the night, HIT THE DECK !" (pop didn't want me catching a stray bullet)
I still have one child living in the home, I wouldn't consider having a gun as I'd have to keep the ammo separate from the weapon! How helpful is that during home invasion?!
I'd enjoy taking a course from FRONT SIGHT, to become competent and confident, and maybe keeping a gun under the pillow (my apartment is on the ground floor). I'd be more comfortable in public if the thing were strapped to my person (shoulder holster) than in a purse ("hang on, assaulter, let me dig into my bag for something . . .").
Guess I could prepare for peace and war at the same time, after all . . .

I am american woman myself and i think that all woman should know how to use a gun for their own safety, I owned one at one time, however i got rid of it because i have too many children in my house, But i do beleive that woman should learn how to use a gun properly in front of an officer and learn the right way how to use a gun, and obey all rules, Men are different they carry guns anywway, But i have mine hidden in a conceled place with written licence and documents that states that i am entiled to have a gun, woman should do this more often

I know some women who own guns. some militant females, some cops, some hunters, some for protection, and some just have them.

I persnoally like guns from a distance. I don't know how I'll react if I ever have to use one. my boyfriend used to have 2 but sold them and plans to get another one when we get our own home. I don't know how I feel about this. he said he'll teach me how to fire them if I want-which I don't know if I will try.
they could be used for protection but if they are used wrong the outcome is horrible. I'm really undecided

I have a little 32 snub and my sister has 4 hand guns but I don't know what they are. I do know one is a glock(sp?). I haven't gone to a shooting range in years but I always enjoyed the practice. My sister wouldn't hesitate taggin someone in the forehead if she had to but I, on the other hand, don't know if I could actually shoot anyone.

I don't carry a gun but I know how to use one. Statistics show that if you carry a gun you are more likely to be shot during a mugging.

Gun should never be carried or owned by anyone except for perhaps the law enforcements. Our crime in United States is far greater that the world combined. Just to compare, the crime here in USA in one day does not even compare to five years of crime in Australia, the Police there dont even carry a gun

I do not carry a gun but my husband has one here at home for safety and protection from robbers and burglars. But I do not feel that I need to carry one. Even if I had one, if someone wanted to really hurt me, they would. And if I really wanted to hurt someone for hurting me, then I could and it would not take a gun to do it.

Guns do nothing but make the average idiot feel like they have power and control when they walk around with it on their hip or whatever they keep it until someone takes it and shoots them with it.

I do not own a gun, but my grandmother did. I personaly would not want one in the house, because I would be afraid someone might tamper with it, and it would go off. I know thats a lame excuse but its a valid fear of mine LOL.

Guns have no place in cities, held by men or women... in the woods, however, I know plenty of women who know their way around a rifle.
