It stems from various events such as Rhorke's Drift, the Battle of Britain etc where Britain has been the underdog and managed to win. So we now support the underdog as we can identify something in them that which we see in ourselves

Because its admirable watching someone clearly out of there league striving to achieve the impossible, and it feels great when they actually do accomplish this.

I don't know we just do. I think we like to see someone who is struggling succeed over someone who seems successful and has it all.
