Is this funnel shape symobolic in any way???

By my recollection, the worse the sin that put you in the Inferno, the lower you are. That would mean that there are fewer people in each level of Hell until there are only three at the very bottom.

Just a guess, but it seems that there are more people whose sin is relatively minor compared with those "below".

Only as an after thought. It is the result of the theism he was taught about the levels of Hell.

not really but that the way dante dreamt hell was like and all the levels of hell forthe many sins people comit.
