Dryer will not start. When you push the start button it will buzz like its trying to start. It is only able to buzz 4 or 5 times before it doesnt do anything when you push the start button. Then if you wait about 5 minutes, you can push the start button and it will buzz again, about 4 or 5 times.

Along with the motor that has been already mentioned, there is a switch on the side of the motor that is used to engage the start windings to make it spin If you remove the front of the dryer as another answer has already described, then you can see the front of the motor has a flat switch on it with 4-6 wires on it. Label them and remove the switch and have it tested. The way this switch works is it slides on the shaft to engage the switch when the motor is off. When it starts turning centrifigal force moves a piece on the shaft away from the switch and the switch then turns "off" the special winding that makes the motor spin. These electric motors will sit there and just hum unless they are given a "boost" by the special start winding that kicks them in the right direction. That is what this switch does. They are cheap and easy to replace as long as you remember which wire goes where. Don't even have to remove the motor to change them as you can see the screws holding the switch to the top front of the motor once the front is off and you are down low looking at the motor. Appliance parts store in your area stocks these all the time as Kenmore is made by Whirlpool and these are the most common dryers on the market and these parts have been used for decades. If the motor is frozen up, or smells very burnt or if the windings inside are burned from checking with a flashlight then all is lost and you need a new motor. Usually though if you hear the humming that little switch will put you back in business and back into dry clothes! :-)

Unplug the dryer. Open the dryer door and remove two screws that hold the lower front panel on. Remove the front panel. Clean out all the accumulated lint from the motor compartment and try turning the drum by hand to loosen it up. If cleaning the motor doesn't get it running, you will probably have to replace the motor because it has overheated.

Instead of going through all this, what has been suggested, you would have already if you knew anything about it, let's face it, then just call Sears and have a tech sent over or get a new dryer, they're not that spendy. This time of year they're having sales and they'll haul away the old dryer.

It sounds like the motor that turns the drum is wearing out. These have a definite lifespan, and when a motor starts to go bad, it just buzzes, like it's trying to spin, but can't.

If you have a detailed manual and some gumption, you could try getting the motor out and taking it to sears to see if you can get a new one. Or, call a tech.

Good luck.

Kenmore appliances are good for their switches going out. you can probably get the part for under 20 bucks. or you can call out the repair person for 50 bucks then just do the job yourself. If it is not the switch then it may be the belt that turns the drum.

Check your vent. If the dryer isn't sensing the clothes dry, the timer will not advance. If your vent is fine, you may need a timer, in which case run about $80-$150.
