95% of all people have IQs somewhere between 70 and 130, so we can assume the average to be 100.

I'm not going to get in to the debate that iq tests are poor measurers of innate intelligence or the characteristic 'g' General cognition I believe it stands for which is what scientists call it.

The average score by definition is 100 with a standard deviation of plus or minus 15. The term 'good' is a bit vage but if your'e above 115 you can say you're above average intelligence. If you've got an iq of 140 you'll be in the top 2% and can apply to join MENSA.

One of the flaws of the iq test is that you can practice the types of questions they ask. It has lead to the criticism that iq tests only measure an individuals ability to do iq tests though I feel this is an overstatement.

So to answer the question directly: 120+ ?

Above 100. Allow about 9 points as a margin for error. I have scored between 120 to 146. However the high scoring ones I knew were IQ tests, so don't take it too seriously. The 120 i didn't know it was a test (complicated reasons). 100 is fine.

I've read that 130-140 is perhaps optimal. A person with that kind of IQ is brighter than average but not so bright that he or she is completely out of sync with others. (This is easier for adults than for children -- kids often make fun of anyone different, whether it's being smarter than average or less smart.)

Average is 85-115. Genius is 135. Mensa is 132. Of course, I.Q. scores don't necessarily show how street smart or common sense smart you are for the most part.

IQ scores are worthless as showing actual intelligence. they only reflect learning and test taking abilities. intelligence is an inherent capability that is impossible to measure.

an adult .......... 85 - 114 is average
115 - 129 is "above average"
130 - 144 is gifted

average score is gained by about 68% of test takers
gifted is about 2%

I took the online IQ and EQ tests... since I'd never done any tests before and have no formal papers to my name... I came up with 127 and 132 respectively... you tell me how good it is? the site says pretty good the first... and in the top 2% the latter... seemingly, employers prefer the latter... so.... anyone wanna to offer this UK pensioner a job;-)
