If I were you, I'd take it to a qualified Apple repair tech and have them do it. That way, if something happens, they are liable to replace the iPod. There are no 40 Ghz iPods, but there are 30 G and 60 G.

You can go to Fry's electronics and they have a little battery replacement kit for it. It has worked for most customers.

If I am not mistaken you cannot. maybe an official dealer, or an Apple care center can do it, but not you at home.
