Well, there could be several things going on here. One could be the program that you are using to play the DVDs with, there is a separate volume control and mute button on there. In control panel under sounds and audio devices, check all the settings. Double tic the speaker icon in the tray and make sure that nothing has been muted except for the microphone. The next thing that I have thought of was the DVD's drivers, right tic on my computer and select manage. In the left pane, select device manager, in the right pane, tic on the plus sign next to DVD/CD-ROM Drives. Right tic on the DVD drive and select uninstall, then reboot the computer to re-install the drivers. The next thing is the sound card drivers, which you can get from Dell on their webpage under support and downloads. I hope one of these things helps you out.

Well if you hope to fix it (if you haven't already) I can try to help.
If you can manage to open your Dell PC Casing and look at the back of the dvd player, there should be a sound cable connected to it and to your motherboard. [other then the red/yellow/black wire and flat grey IDE cable connect to it] If there's no cable you can get one in your local PC stores. The cable is universal, and there's only one way to plug it in. However locating the slot to the motherboard may be tricky. Check the motherboard manual for that slot.
But on the other hand, another way to listen to sound on the DVD player is simple. All computers comes with a software to play music and videos. Since you need to turn your computer on to use your dvd player anyway, you can still get sound from using the software. [ie; Windows Media Player, PowerDVD, etc]

Have you tried updating all of your drivers? If not, go to Control Panel ->Performance -> System -> Hardware. Click the button Device Manager. Scroll down to your sound and DVD Players. Double Click them. If they have a tab for Driver, then go to it and click Update Driver. You should be connected to the internet to do this.
What are you using to run it? Try running it in different programs. If it runs somewhere else, then you can try to find out what is wrong with your previous programs settings.
If that doesn't work, then you should definitely contact Dell Support.

We've just got a dell too and the software was pre installed. There should be an icon on your desk top looking like a CD with 'Burn CDs & DVDs' under it. Otherwise just download one off the web.

Do you have the speaker? Ask dell to load a windvd software on your computer. If anything is alright.Open the control panel and and click sound-speech and audio device tab.Open the sound -see what type of sound is written in the box.,If anything typed there, delete it and keep no audio sound. On the speakers side see if there is any box MUTE which is marked, remove that check mark.If you don't have a dvd player down load it from http://www.yahoo.com a media player.configured it by rebooting your computer. You can down load it a real player,Window media player and apples player.
