I have a new home and am unfamiliar with chimneys. Is there any way to stop air flow down a chimney while a fire is burning? This happens every time there is a small puff of wind outside. Even a small breeze blows air down the chimney causing burning embers to blow into the room.

A decent chimney cap will solve the problem. Try an HVAC dealer first. They will more info for you than Lowes or Builders Square! Good luck!

Extend the height of the chimney atop the roof. Downdrafts are caused by the airflows that move up and down the roof. If the chimney is too short, the air will flow into the chimney. There are rules for chimney heights. If your home is brand new, insist the builder correct the problem. If it is old, maybe an addition has changed the configuration of the roof, requiring additional chimney height.

This really shouldn't be happening under normal wind conditions. The chimney needs to be taller above the roof. You say it is a new home. I would talk to the builder or manfacturer of the home.

most do-it-yourself home stores sell a chimney cap that is easily installed, or call a furnace guy. they will install one for you. be wary of those chimney companies, they may try to sell you liners that you really dont need, all in the name of safety of course.
