"X" is an abbreviation for Christ, theologians have used this abbreviation for various reasons. I find it tacky, however when used on a greeting card or announcement. Just my opinion.

The letter we write as X is 'chi' in the Greek alphabet. It corrects to 'ch' in English, but is given a 'k' sound, as in 'orchestra'. The X or chi was used by early Christians as a short-hand code when they were being persecuted by the polytheistic Romans.

It's an abbreviation for "Christ" usually. Same reason some people call me xtine for short.
