I mean who lights up for the first time, chokes and gags and then says "Wow, that was fantastic. I could easily do that every hour for the rest of my life"

I used to smoke. I started when I was a kid, and we - my best friend, Rita, and I - did it solely because it was forbidden. We'd come home from parochial school, steal two of her fathers' cigarettes and hide in the woods, smoking and talking about the other forbidden fruit - boys.

When my mother died - way ahead of her time - from lung cancer, my first reaction was to sit down and light a cigarette. I looked up and caught sight of myself in the reflection of the hospital doors, and I thought, "This is just about the stupidest thing you could be doing..."

I began a Quit Program the very next day, and was smoke-free within three weeks.

I used to hate smoking, and I totally respect that you do. It's smart to say no to cigarettes. But I got drunk one evening and a hot guy gave me a cigarette. I smoked it, and I loved it. Saying no when drunk isn't so easy. I held out until the next weekend at a party where some people were smoking outside and I smoked another. I figured social smoking would be okay. But that didn't last long; social smoking does NOT work. I'm finishing my 3rd pack of the day right now! I smoke so much because smoking is so enjoyable. I'm aware of the risks and I hope it kills me before it disables me. The biggest problem with smoking is that it really limits the guys I can date. Pretty much I can only date smokers or guys that have a smoking fetish. So I'm far more limited.

Because 'it's cool'. You see your parents doing it and you think it's sooo grown up.

Nat, I don't know if you were joking or not, but weed isn't chemically addictive, only psychologically. Babies aren't conscious enough to be born with psychological dependence on a substance so whoever told you that.. was an idiot.

When they're about 10 years old one kid whose parents smoke steels a pack of cigarettes from the carten and then they sneak off to sit and "smoke." They feel more grown up and "bad."

good point! After it enters the body, your body wants more (it's addicting remember?)...some people stop after one (after they try it) but a lot of people like the feeling it gives them...I don't smoke and I NEVER will! I don't need to smoke to feel good! :)

PEER PRESSURE AND THE RUSH IT FIRST GIVES YOU. THAT WAS WHAT GOT ME STARTED, I COUGHED AND EVERYTHING, BUT THEN I GOT THAT HEAD RUSH AND WAS LIKE HEY, I'M GONNA TRY IT AGAIN AND I DIDN'T COUGH BUT STILL GOT THE RUSH AND KEPT ON SMOKING FROM THERE AROUND ALL MY FRIENDS, IN TURN, GETTING ME ADDICTED, AND IT HAS BEEN 8 YEARS AND STILL HAVEN'T QUIT.
