Sometimes writers are alcoholics...
Depends on the person. Alcohol loosens inhibitions, so some folks find it easier to write what's really on their minds with a little "liquid courage." On the other hand, there are poems like "Kublai Khan," which probably would have been fantastic except for the buzz-kill postman...if you're going to be drunk and write, make sure you're not disturbed, or you could lose your train of thought...
Or...write sober and take notes...could be simpler...

Personally i think somewhere in the middle.
If i'm drunk i find what i've written makes no sense at all, but then if i'm sober i find it hard to come up with ideas because i over-analyse everything.
Half a bottle of wine or a few beers and it's the perfect balance!

I can usually only come up with my best, most offensive, questions after a drink so I would say with a drink! When your stoned (which i never am these days!) you come up with some inspirational ideas about everything, all the great songwriters were always off their nuts so there has to be some truth in it!

I am partial to a small tipple, but I don't require alcohol to write. However what I do require is music. I cannot stand writing in silence. In particular, I'm quite taken with listening to Mariah Carey's 'all I want for Christmas is you' song over and over again. It's quite upbeat so I'm able to type quite quickly, the song itself is nothing to scream and shout about.

Cold sober. Those others frequently wrote nonsense which they either threw away or extensively revised before submitting to the publisher. Even then, it was sometimes revised by the publisher.

i would buy yourself a cheap dictophone for when your tiddly, to record instantaneously what your thinking, which you can listen to sober and then use it as inspiration. but i dont think a proper drunken state will lead to anything at all.
the guys you mentioned were habitual hard drinkers who could hold drink or two.
you sound like a whippersnapper, so youll probably need 9-10 years to get used to it.

I don't know whether it's easier to write drunk or sober.
But I do know one thing, it's easier to write when inspired.
Do I have to be drunk to be inspired? Perhaps, I would be too drunk to know that the muse is there.
Do I have to be sober to be inspired? Perhaps, I would be too rational to know that the muse is sitting on my shoulder whispering to me.

It's easier to write when drunk, but your spelling ends up crap. I know this from experience of sending drunk texts to my boyfriend.
