A fortnight after giving birth my daughter is hospitalised because of severe bleeding [clothes soaking wet] and clots coming away. The medics have her on antibiotics and a drip but don't seem to be too concerned, which to me is surprising because last night it was a blue-light emergency situation.
Can anyone shed some light on a worrying situation?

Sounds like she's had a post partum haemorrhage (PPH). If the uterus doesn't contract properly after the birth to control the bleeding, or if even small pieces of the placenta remain inside after delivery, then sometimes a woman bleeds too much (rather than the normal amount of bleeding expected after a birth). Often this happens in the first 24 hours after birth, which is called a primary PPH, but a secondary PPH can happen up until about 6 weeks after delivery.

The antibiotics are probably in case there was something left inside, which could cause an infection, and the drip will help her replace lost fluids. Sounds like they were rightly concerned, as PPH can be life threatening, but that the blood loss hasn't been great enough for her to need a blood transfusion, which is good. If the hospital aren't worried, I'm sure she'll be fine, but she may be feeling quite shaky, quite emotionally and physically, from the shock of it.

It sounds like maybe a dnc will be needed. They may not have done a good job cleaning her up inside from the after birth. The antibiotics will help her in case of an infection or to help prevent one. If they are not worried today and she is still in the hospital then they probably have the bleeding under control and she will probably be fine. I know that is not much consolation to a dad who is worried about his little girl but if she isn't worried and her doctor and hospital aren't worried, then hopefully they know what they are doing and she will be fine. Good luck.

hi
Im not a midwife or nurse so i'm sure someone else will give you a better answer - I have heard that not all the placenta can be delivered after the birth and comes away later - so it maybe this? don't foget also that bleeding after birth for at least 2 weeks is normal - in fact if she didn't bleed after birth then there would be a probelm.

anyway I hope she gets better soon. Congrats on the new arrival Grandad!

Hi, I agree with Purplepad. I am a midwife and the answer by Purplepad says it all. This is more common than most people think, try not to worry support your daughter & her partner, she may feel tired for some time to come due to the blood loss, if she does not have a blood transfusion she may well be on iron tablets for a while which can take time to work.

It sounds like she had a retained placenta, where part of the placenta didn't come away and has caused an infection.
Try not to worry - the doctors will have transfused her if she needs it and antibiotics are standard. She will be fine, honest!

My sister had the exact same thing. I remember I was very worried at the time too. Though she recovered fine and had her second one without complications. You'll see that in a couple of months time it'll be just a bad memory and your daughter will have recovered fully.

Congrats by the way. ;)

Get someone to ask the doctor or nurses at the hospital. They must know by now!
