Well I've got really addicted to crocheting! I taught myself, and I even use secondhand yarn from Goodwill, it depends though.. Sometimes there's bags of it, and sometimes there's none, but I've learned to buy yarn blankets and afghans. They're fun to take apart and organize too!

Google these places How to:
Annies Attic(one free pattern everyday!)
StitchGuide(videos and pictures)
and Free Crochet Paterns

Also, cross stitch is fun and pretty easy. Some floss(DMC), aida cloth(14 ct) and some patterns, and voila! Great for cheap gift giving and decorating a home on a budget!

Crochet is cheap. All it requires is a crochet hook (about $1.50) and some cheap Red Heart acrylic yarn (about $2.00), and either your internet or library for a how-to. Check Debbie Stoller's "The Happy Hooker" if you're interested.

Also, decoupage is cheap if you're the sort who holds onto old postcards, greeting cards, magazines, etc. Just get some decoupage glue (like Mod Podge) or water down some white glue (like Elmer's) and start sticking favorite pictures, sayings, etc to whatever you like (binders, tables, wooden boxes...).

Try speedcubing. All it really costs is $10 for a Rubik's Cube, and once you get faster, maybe a can of silicone spray for lubricant and some replacement stickers. The hard part is learning how to solve the cube and then getting fast at it - I recommend the Petrus method (http://lar5.com/cube/) to start and, once you get better, try moving on to the Fridrich method (http://www.ws.binghamton.edu/fridrich/cube.html).

in the experience that your interested in much less costly interests, attempt sewing and knitting. it somewhat is somewhat exciting to make new issues, and to furnish them on your loved ones, pals, or maybe pets. It gets you busy, passes the time, and enormously trouble-free to. merely grab a needle, a thimble, some cloth, and thread, and stitch away! Or, if no longer interested in sewing, you could start up accumulating issues, mutually with funds, money, and previous merchandise. One theory of money could be those particular version ones, those with the lower back having a state on it.

are you into cars and/or planes? Get a model kit that you put together.

Also give drawing a shot, it's a good way to pass the time

Knot tying is a really fun and cheap hobby. You can make some really decorative things with rope, too.
