Without being able to inspect the machine I can only venture a guess that the most likely cause is the rubber drive belt from the electric motor to the drum is either worn or needs an adjustment . If this belt slips at all it will burn from the friction and give off an un-godly burnt rubber smell . like a slipping fan belt in your car.

A belt like that makes it agitate is burning up or the transmission, what makes it agitate also may be going out. I learned age doesn't matter. I had a maytag thats transmission went out after 4-5 years and the service man said it should have lasted like 8.

If gasoline or some other fluid agent is on your clothes & not washed out completely, it can CATCH ON FIRE in your dryer. If this is NOT the case, it could be your heating element in the dryer. Check for lint, dust, under the dryer and clean if possible before calling for a repair, but do not go off with your dryer unattended when its smelling strange.

Unless you are handy, it means an expensive repair bill.
The belt needs to be replaced. You have to open up the washer motor, find the belt, remove it, purchase a new one, and install it. If you can't do that, call someone.
