The word 'association' has three meanings

1 An 'association' is a group of people who have joined together because they have a common occupation, aim, or interest. Example : She has informed a housing association to build homes for single mothers.

2 Your 'association' with a person, group, organization etc is the connection that you have with them. Example : We shall help each other as far as we can while our business association lasts.

3 If something has a particular association for you, you connect it
in your mind with a particular memory, idea, feeling, etc. Example : The name has many strange associations.

You could be referring to a technique that therapists use to try and evaluate the thoughts of a client. Word association = therapist says one word, client says the first thing that comes into their heads. For example (Therapist in all caps)
STORE
food
MOVIE
x-rated
UNIVERSITY
frat parties
MUSEUM
my grandma

and so on. The idea is that the responses will reveal some hidden quirks in the client and hel; the therapist know what measures to take for the client to improve and get well again.

OR you could mean vocab assistance.

Say I want to learn the meaning of colonize. . .so I associate that word with 'bees living in large groups'. Now I can remember the bees - and remember that they live in 'colonies' and BINGO, I have remembered the word colonize.

Or the word Bishop. . .associate it with a piece in the chess game, and there you are! Remember the chess game and get the bishop.
