I agree with the first guy, but in more simplistic terms, "proximate" just means that something is more related to, or closer to a certain thing, idea, or action, than "approximate." For example, if a stoke is the proximate cause of death, that means that the stroke was the "main" reason for the death. If a stroke is the approximate cause of death, that means that the stroke is related to what caused the death, but maybe not the sole cause of death. I hope this helps.
