Put about a half cup of baking soda in the wash and rinse cycle. This not only gives them a clean smell, it also softens them.

I had the same problem. I used to throw towels in with other clothes and just use regular soap and fabric softener. The towels always smelled bad afterward. I started doing towels-only loads with soap, fabric softener and bleach, (hot water) and the problem went away. Now they always smell clean! :-) I think the bleach was the answer.

That should not be. I'd look into cleaning your washer.
Or maybe you need to use more detergent? Or bleach? Clorox on your white towels would work wonders. Color safe on the colored towels wont help as much, but you should probably try it.

If your towels are white, you could try some bleach. Otherwise, I know that they sell Febreeze to go into laundry. Also, when you dry the towels you could use a dryer sheet.

Put them in a boil wash. Maybe even add a few drops of something like lavender oil. And make sure they're completely dry before you put them away. Finish them off in the tumble dryer if they've been air drying.

Do you use fabric softener? Because my sisters towels small bad too because she doesn't. I would try that first. Or try putting a potpourri sash in where you keep your towels.

Put a lot of bleach in there perhaps.
Or before you even do wash them, don't leave them scrunched up if they're still wet.
I don't have that problem, and I do both of those things.

Adding vinegar or pinesol to your wash load should help.
