A phobia is an irrational fear of a particular thing or circumstance. A panic attack is free-floating. There is no identifiable source.

Panic attacks can happen without being in any particular situation. Hearbeat accelerates, (tachycardia for some), sweating, dizzy, irrational fear set off by the enviorment (I have had panic attacks in malls, schools, crowded places, movie theaters because of the lights flashing and the noise) etc. They are usually tied to when a person has an anxiety disorder.

Phobias are self standing irrational fears. It is possible to develop a panic attack when dealing with a phobia (a panic attack while on the plane ifyour phobia is of flying).

Yes a panic attack can be the culmination of a social phobia. At the moment of the panic attack, it may seem to be out of nowhere. But it is usually precipitated from some thought, a synapse of some type in your brain, that begins a cascading pathway (usually biological) that leads to an attack. After the attack, you may be able to reason that the attacks seem to happen whenever I am out in a social gathering of some kind. Maybe I have some unconscious memory that precipitates this attack, and need to work on figuring that out and working on disconnecting that pathway!
