It lies in a big glen between the Tatra Mountains and Gubałówka Hill. Zakopane is the most important Polish centre of mountaineering and skiing, and is visited by about three million tourists annually. The most important alpine skiing points are Kasprowy Wierch, Nosal and Gubałówka Hill.

Zakopane has the highest elevation of any town in Poland; within its municipal region there exists a variation of 800-1000 m of altitude. The central point of the town is at the crosssroads of Krupówki and Kościuszki streets.

Zakopane is very pretty. We were there five years ago and stayed at these little cabins called Osrodek Wypoczynokowy on a street called Przewodnikow Tatrzanskich. They were right by a rushing stream which one might consider noisy but it put us right to sleep! These cabins aren't first class hotels though; while they do have showers, stove, frige, TV, and beds, bring your own soap, shampoo, bedding, towels and some utensils like plastic spoons, bowls, forks, etc if you plan to eat in the cabin. Pack like you're going camping in other words.

We also saw the COOLEST cemetery called Old Cemetery (Stary Cemetery) and I say cool bcz all the headstones were either made of wood, stone or metal. No two were alike. Also all the little candles flickering on the graves at dusk gave it a cozy atmosphere.
