I want to stay away from any hormonal methods for obvious reasons... Even the mini-pill will negatively affect milk supply. My OB/GYN suggested a copper IUD, but that is too expensive for us.
My husband and I both hate using condoms. So far, we've been relying on breastfeeding as a contraceptive (and also withdrawal) but I know that protection lasts a maximum of 6 months, and that it's not entirely reliable anyway.
So any suggestions?
(Oh yeah... My baby is 3 1/2 months old. She nurses ever 2-3 hours durning the day, and I haven't gotten my period back yet)

Try going with Mirena IUD I used that and breastfed my son exclusively for 12 months and continued to until he was 26 months supplementing with food as well. My Milk supply wasn't affected one bit! With my 1st child I only breastfed for 9 months BC I had to go on the pill at that point after the Depo (that was a horror story for me and I would advice any to stay away from it).

You can go to planned parenthood and they will give you a discount of either Mirena or Para Guard. best of luck and CONGRATS

I got the Mirena IUD (non-copper) which is a low-dose of hormone. It did not affect my milk supply in any way and my baby is almost a year old now and perfectly healthy!! ( I should add, this is my second daughter; after my first, I like you, relied on breastfeeding and withdrawl as birth control, and you guessed it! Six months after giving birth I was pregnant again!) The IUD's are expensive (I don't reccomend the copper from relatives that had it, trust me...) but TOTALLY worth it. See if your OB can work on a payment plan or something. It's totally worth it in my eyes. I don't have to worry about a pill to take, a patch to replace or anything else for another SIX years!!! Woo-hoo! It was worth the $400 to me!! Good luck with whatever you decide though! It's your body so it's ultimately up to you.

Breastfeeding does NOT work as a contraceptive. Ask my sister-in-law who has 3 children (in 3 years!!!). Nor does the withdrawl method (ask any Catholic with 9 kids!). There are foams, condoms, and many other methods. Check in the condom/feminine aisle. Go back to your doctor and explain your problem. He/she can probably suggest something else that would work for you.
Another suggesting: check the LaLeche League website and see if they have any suggestions. Good Luck... you're going to need it if you don't use "something".

Use the ring or the pill or just pump the milk and go on the pill.
