I heard a rumor that even if your house is old, if the walls are white they will not have lead in the paint. Any truth to that??

lead based paint did come in white. most likely, though, is that the lead paint has been painted over many times over the years. most hardware stores sell a lead test kit. it is used to test ANY surface for lead. it would be the smart thing to buy a kit and test some surfaces in your home. also, it will not test positive if the lead has been painted over by regular latex paint. keep in mind, lead based paint is dangerous to sand, scrape or strip off with a chemical striper. it can cause serious health problems if ingested of inhaled. please use caution if you are going to remove the old paint!!!!

I'm sure all paint manufactured many years ago contained lead. I once saw a documentary on the subject that featured old, peeling white paint on window frames that was proving hazardous.

it was used in homes and apartments when i was a kid in the 50's. and also used on cribs! if you can believe it! of course ,that was before we were TOLD the lead was IN the paint!
and i don't think they were big on lable indredients back then! if you have children, you may want to contact the environmental agency in you area. they can test the paint.
