There's a great little program called Restore IT that's out there. I've had a hard disk failure and still managed to get back up and running in no time.

Nice thing about this little program is, it makes a full backup to wherever you want it to be, can be scheduled to do it automatically and even if your windows gets pooched, it can still reload your system right back to where it was.

Check it out, this is a lot easier and far more complete than burning disks.

You need special backup software in order to accomplish this task and I can highly recommend you True Image by Acronis. True Image is a very comprehensive backup toll with tons of features and backup locations available. As for backup instructions I don't think that you'' encounter any problems because True Image has a very simple and intuitively understandable interface. Also I'd recommend you to backup you system both to the external drive and to a hidden partition which can be created using True Image. You can download the latest and the most fully featured version here: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/
Or download a free version here: http://www.acronis.com/mag/vnu-ati7

you can use the copy and paste option to copy files from one hard drive to theother...! I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some drive problems can be easily fixed by yourself using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.

You could copy everything over to a flashdrive, but if you can afford it, it would be better to buy a USB external hard drive (on my wish list). You could get one as large as your PC's hard drive and backup the whole thing.

would be nice if you gave a tad bit more info on your computer (example - which operating system - windows98/windowsxp??mac?)

if you're using windows - check in the microsoft.com website
the one listed below is for windowsXP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/bott_03july14.mspx

if that one doesn't help - do a search at the top for "how to back up "insert your operating system version here" (example windows 98) hard drive"
