Here is your problem. That old computer simply does not have the horsepower or memory to do the job. If you could find the Original Windows 98 disk, that would be the way to go. (within your budget)
BUT, you can also ADD more memory. That would cost some bucks. (more than $10). Look up your computer at http://www.coastmemory.com and expand it to at least 256MB. That old rig would probably work best with Windows XP Pro if it had 512MB or more. That old rig may have come with 64MB. It would probably be BEST to disgard that old memory and buy the MAXIMUM that the computer will accept. So you are probably looking at spending $90.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

If your friend gave you the Windows CD along with the PC, why not format the hard drive and reinstall Windows. Format will totally clean the hard drive and you can start from scratch. You should be aware, however, that MS no longer support Win98, no upgrades, no patches, nada.

but the windows XP PRO , this will allow you to have the computer, registered in your name, then you will have the latest up dates from Microsoft up dates, it will format the disk keeping you original configurations in tact, and all the old files will be removed, restored with new one, saving your personal settings, that's all you need to do, then you set.
