It's pretty sick, imo, to burn any creature. However, I do see a difference (from a non-Buddhist perspective where an ant could be an ancestor) between torching an ant and a dog. Ants are routinely destroyed, at least the fireant variety because they are "pests" and injure people and animals. People routinely squash bugs by stepping on them or inadvertently via a splattering encounter with a windshield. A kid killing bugs is not generally a warning sign of serious deviant behavior but a kid killing or maliciously harming dogs and cats which have been domesticated and brought into the family, would be seen as behaving in a matter that would concern professionals and parents.

Yes but it kept running away. So I tried my neighbours tortoise, much easier but the smell of the burning was gross
