Right-click on your recycle bin and choose Do not move files to the recycle bin. In File Explorer, use the menu to do a search for every folder with Temp in the name; be sure to include subfolders; delete all the contents of the folders you find. Finally, 40 GB is a very small drive these days, and external drives and new PCs are surprisingly inexpensive. You've run into one of the basic limits on a PC. You could install a larger drive, but with a PC as old as yours, it's time to upgrade.

Don't forget that most BIOSes can support two hard disc drives. Why not add a second internal - for example 160GB - drive, and copy all your data files onto this, leaving the old 40GB one for the operating system and programs. This also has the advantage that, if you ever have to re-install your OS, which reformats the drive, your data will be safely on the second drive.

You have several options.
First try defragmenting the drive. Second, if you have large amounts of picture files you can place them in zip or rar files to compact them a bit. Neither of these will free up that much space but they will help.
A better option is to burn files you dont often use to disks (CDs or DVDs) to save them and then you can delete them off your hard drive.
Your best chouce is to add another hard drive. This is the best choice because you can instantly add hundreds of gigs of space to your computer.
