It turns on, but shuts down after a few seconds. It will not boot from cd either? Not shure what's going on... thanks for the help.

Definitely the battery. You don't list the model number. some batteries have battery indicator lights showing how much charge is left. Apparently yours doesnt have the lights. I would remove the dead battery and leave the laptop plugged into the AC adapter at all times until the replacement battery arrives. Be careful not to trip over the power cable, since the laptop will die without power.

It will do this if the battery doesn't have enough power. Make sure the AC connector is fully connected and showing that the battery is charging. It's hard to say otherwise what's going on.
