Some beginning skaters find it helpful to push a chair around the ice until they are comfortable skating. Turn the chair around and hold onto the seatback. The chair will easilly slide along the ice and you will have a crutch or training wheels to help you gain your confidence and stability.

Ice-skating is one of those activities that you have to try for yourself to truly figure out how to do it, no matter how many tips people give you. The only thing no one told me about was the grooves in the ice. Deeper grooves in the ice are caused by people doing tricks on their skates or skating very fast and very hard. How do these affect you and me you might ask? Well I was skating along, slowly and peacefully, and my right foot caught in one of these grooves and started following the groove to the right. Needless to say I almost did the splits and fell over. I have no real solution for this other than watch for them though. lol Just giving you something else to consider.

If you can roller blade, you can ice skate! Just take it slowly and be prepared from some bruises!

You may want to take lessons, but anyway, wear elbow pads or tie a pillow to your butt (you may look stupid but trust me it HELPS!) to stop just sort of cross your feet to make a triangle or start turning left to right until you stop.
