After giving this question a great deal of thought (and even discussion) in the pub we have come to the (almost) unanimous conclusion that wanker is the most effective, the jerk who disagreed has now quite correctly been barred from our debating society!
In fact for some unkown reason we have all been barred from our local pub, the manager who we had tested the two words on throughout the evening obviously had no idea on how to conduct a serious debate, he was a wanker without a doubt, we have now found a very nice spot on a park bench and the debate is really still ongoing, but I'm pretty sure the collective conclusion is ...... I forget now, I'll get back to you when I've finished with this police officer !

Wanker. Jerk isn't really an insult, it's more of something you would say in a joking way.

I prefer wanker to jerk anyday. Wanker just has that extra feeling and depth that any deserving insult should have.
