A Democrat belongs to the Democratic Party. Here's a discussion of why this is an issue, albeit a petty one.

You will always hear derisive comments about ANY political party. The people belonging to that party are called Democrats, but I think it is the Democratic Party. There is no accounting for the selection of names for groups, political or not.
Names are selected to attract people like the Democratic Party, People For the American Way, People's Democratic Republic, and most often the name is misleading, trying to make the group look like something it is not or has goals which it does not.

The Party is Democratic (adjective). People who are members are Democrats (noun). On the Republican side, there is no differentiation because the same word is both an adjective and noun.

democratic party - conveys a more "fair" or process respecting group
democrat party - is more accurate of the group it is.
*note* the party that historically most disrespects the democratic proces are the democrats.

I don't necessarily think it is being derisive, just a variation on the same name.
I actually think either is correct. Just my opinion.
