I got one that read, "You are politically independent." I taped it to my notebook because it was so . . . different from any other one I'd read. That was about seven years ago.

This year, I re-registered, changing my political party from Democrat to Independent. Spooky or self-fulfilling prophecy?

well I've thought about that but the conclusion that I came to was that fortune cookies have very general fortunes that can apply to just about anyone. Most don't make statements like yours tho, so that is kind of weird. For most of them, they things like "underneath, you are a very caring person" or "you believe giving is good" or something. Does anyone really WANT to consider themselves uncaring, selfish, or irresponsible? Most fortune cookies generally assume good things about people to provoke the natural instinct to view ourselves as more caring, more thoughtful, and more intelligent than what we normally think of ourselves as. Mix that with the tantalizing mystery factor and you have yourself a fortune that is manufactured to produce a certain type of reaction. Usually a positive one. I've never had even a relatively negative fortune statement. Usually positive, thought provoking, or comedic. Very general and easily applicable to most situations. Think about it, if you got a fortune cookie that said, "you are a freakin a**hole" you wouldnt really want to believe that. Might not want to visit that same chinese buffet so often. Also, fortune cookie companies wouldn't be so productive. I think there's a lot of psychology/strategy behind those things. Maybe just me tho

Nearly every fortune I've read from a fortune cookie has come true. However, there's no magic or divining involved. It's all about the power of suggestion. If I open a fortune cookie and it says, "You are going to have a rotten day." then things that normally wouldn't bother me are going to really get me down to the point that I truly do have a bad day. It's not because the fortune was warning me of anything, it's because I got it into my head that I was going to have a bad day and made it happen, all on my own.

Incidentally, I also found a fortune in a cookie that changed my life. It said, "Not to worry! You will always have everything you need." I found that comforting, so I had it laminated and taped it to my bedroom mirror. Now, an entire decade later, I have always had everything I've needed. Even when times were hard, I just remembered what the fortune said and things have always fallen into place for me. They would have anyway, but because I was thinking positively, I helped it happen.

Spooky that you'd sign on with the Freaks and Wierdos Party.

However, in the interest of making this a not completely slanderous answer, my fortune cookie that came true said that the waitress would be bringing the check.

I got one once, and it said "A nice cake is waiting for you". Pretty dumb, but I kept it. The next day, we had some people over for dinner, and they brought a cake! My favorite too! Weirdest damn thing that ever happened to me.

But I think its best to stick with independents. The dems disgust me, and the republicans are starting to disappoint me, so independent.

I read a fortune cookie that said 'You're going to get hit by a bus', handed it to my friend, he walked outside and got hit by a bus.

FORTUNE COOKIES ARE NO JOKING MATTER MY FRIENDS, THEY CAN MEAN LIFE OR DEATH.

... It's just a cookie, it may or may not come true but opening the cookie will not change that.

Yeah, I've had a few of those. I think once it was about someone I was sitting with when I read it, & I showed it to my friends & we were all cracking up. Yeah. It was funny, yet scary.

Closest I came was my fortune cookie that had no fortune in it.

Just like my wallet.
