I'd build my team around Soriano because he is younger and is now reaching his full potential. He is also versatile, playing 2nd or outfield, can bat anywhere in the line up. He'd be the perfect player to build a team on.

I would get Andy Pettitte. I'd get him because pitching wins baseball games. And I can't afford an "ace" like Schmidt to win 15 or less games every year. And Soriano is a great leeadoff hitter, fielder, and player, but 165 SO's doesn't fit my lead-off list. He should also be in the top 3 in OBP for my team.

Back to Pettitte, he's not a strike-out artist but he is not a groundball pitcher either and that's a good mix. He also is a lefty and this is what baseball lacks: Lefty aces!

He's been with the yanks for at least 96-03 meaning he's got playoff experience, and 4 World Series experience, and 4 WS rings.

And he has a great pick-off move and picking off a player on first base can kill the team's momentum and win us the game.

He is also the 2nd lowest on your list for $ per year. I would sign him for 3 years wth a club option for the 4th year.

I'd go with Schmidt.

I think Soriano is a good addition to the Cubs, but pitching is the toughest commodity to find in baseball, and Schmidt has been on the game's premiere pitchers over the past five seasons. Pettitte is a year older than Schmidt, and I think he's starting a downward slide. Not only did Pettitte's ERA take ERA take a big bump last season, but his WHIP was up by 40%. I'd take Schmidt for his consistency, and because I trust him to hold up at a higher level than Andy.

I would have signed in this order:

Jason Schmidt - a more power pitcher who really hasn't had a major breakdown in his arm yet.

Andy Pettitte - Lefty starter who had a great 2nd half, but has had some recent arm issues

Alfonso Soriano - Bats are always easier to develop than arms.

Scott in NY stuck rooting for the Pirates who'll never sign any of these until we get a Mark Cuban to own the team!

Soriano died in the playoffs, when he was needed most. We have all seen teams with greta offensive output players who have gone nowhere. I would go with Schmidt!, based on your choices. In actuality I would sign Yohan santana, then david eckstein (theres more to the game then just HRs). Then take it from there. That whole contract thing you mentioned is something I always thought about.

What if you pay a player based on the numbers he puts up for that year. Sort of like so much money for RBIs, HRs, etc.

I wouldn't sign any of them. No player is worth that much money for a year. Unless every time they go to bat, they get a base hit or a home run. Or win every game with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th given they are in that situation. I like baseball but I hate the salary structure.
