It gives you a great sense of value when you are the best and other people like you more because you are the best.

Out of need. The need to be noticed and the need to feel that they need to show the world they are somebody. When a person is content with thier life they dont feel the need to compete with anyone since thier life is very satisfying. Some people I would imagine are so competitive because the way they are raised. It is good to work hard at being your best but not when you are trying to show up someone else. Not everyone can be the best at everything. Like I told my boys one of you might be good at football and not at baseball and vice a versa but it doesnt mean that one of you is any better than the other it only means that one is able to do something the other can not.
I guess you could say most everyone wants to be the one on top and not on the bottom or in the middle. But what they for get is that they might be best in one thing and total loosers at another.

Think survival of the fittest.

Not only do you have to be bigger and stronger (to protect yourself, your property, and your family), not only do you have to be faster (to catch your dinner, to out run your predators), not only do you have to be healthier (so you don't drop down and get trod upon by the others on your journey south), but you have to be smarter. The strong, the quick, the healthy, and the clever people survive. When we moved out of the caves and into Greece, for example, we survived anyway (fit or unfit). Instead of fighting against Herog for a wife, we used our brains to simulate such behavior in competition (Olympics, war, etc.). It is who we are. It is our nature. And, even today, when you see some jerk kissing up to the person in charge or some person locked away in a room all his life, studying physics, it all goes back to the cave---we have to be the best: have the best jobs, go to the best schools, have the best grades, have the best stuff, dress the best, ...... it just goes on. Maybe we won't die if we are not the best anymore, but our fragile egos will certainly suffer if we come in last place.

It's not to be the best, it's to get money or power. If they were close to being the best, they wouldn't be competing.

People are just competative. It's instinct. Just like animals are...it's only nature.

So the whole society can improve. But they don't do it any good if they compete the Neo-Con way: cheating, bullying, brainwashing, and claiming excessive privileges.

Not really compete. You should compete with yourself, meaning you have to outdo or improve yourself the last time.

I think the answer is biological. Watch a group of chimps and you have your answer. We can't help ourselves. We need to manage the bananas.
