You can as long as you dont move into another check while doing so. You cant move your king into check ever , but if you can capture your opponents piece without moving into check the move is legal.as far as I know though,the only piece that can put a king in check and still be in a kings striking distance is a pawn, bishop, rook or Queen. Your opponent would be very foolhardy to put anything but a pawn within the King's reach.

The king can capture any piece occupying the 8 squares around it, and it moves to that square. The king can never put itself in check, so of course, if it is in check on the square on which it takes a piece after the captured piece is removed, that is an illegal move..

The king is allow to capture a piece as long as that capture does not place him in check. If such a move removes check and improves your situation then do it.
