There is something eerie about team names that do not end with an "s". Wild, Avalanche, and Lightning being they.
Some team names, like the Calgary Flames do not make sense. It made sense when they were the Atlanta Flames ( Atlanta was burnt to the ground for those who don't know. )
Best: Colorado Rockies ( Good enough to be reused by the baseball team. )

Best: Kings (majestic, all powerful, leader - what could be better than that.)
Worst: Maple Leafs (besides the fact that Maple Leaves would be the grammatically correct way to say it, what the heck do leaves do except fall of trees and die - oh yeah get eaten by animals)

I think the best ones are the classic hockey names like the blues, flyers, red wings, senators, canadians, maple leafs etc. any of the names that aren't necessarily an aggressive animal.
