R & B is supposed to stand for Rythm and Blues, although the genre has been twisted and misused. There are very few "R & B" artists that I would still consider to actually be rythm and blues....

its rhythm and blues, but theres so many types
so its hard to define example the early rollin stones are called R&B, its sort of rocky soundin though. and then again beyonce knowles is R&B and that sounds totally different.
its hard to define.. but mostly based around
a strong rhythm and strong soulful vocals right..

what makes a class of people in rhythm and blues is simply their individual way of expressing themselves in song. they are all not the same. for instance, the isley brothers' style is different from joss stone, yet it's categorized the same because of the manner in which it's done/sang/performed. hope this helps bring clarity...
