The modern Republican Party, though some of its roots can be traced back to Jefferson's Democratic-Republican Party, was founded in the early 1850s as an anti-slavery and pro-Westward expansion party. The Party's website credits Alvan E. Bovay as its founder. Its official founding date was July 6, 1854, when it held its first convention in Jackson, MI.

Thomas Jefferson it's mission was simple to promote and protect states rights. The democratic parties mission was to promote federalism
