Get a short subcription to the Tampa Tribune. They probably have a website. I live a bit south of Tampa and never realized that the humidity upped the temperature so much or that the thunderstorms were so intense. The coast near big cities has excellent medical facilities, and you can scout out a good school district - although individual schools change dramatically when principals change.
Contrary to public opinion, it is not cheaper to live in FL, generally because wages are lower (unless your husband is getting paid a northern company's pay rate), and there are fees (not taxes!) tacked onto everything. Rent for a year and ride around alot. When you buy, apply for "Homesteading" and don't move again - it protects your taxes. Oh, and insist on seeing a topographical map of the area you want to live in, The most unexpected places flood - and you can't play in the water because of toxic lawn product run-off and fire ants.

It's like the North turned upside down. You lock yourself inside with the airconditioning from May 1 to Oct 31, and enjoy the outdoors and all the traffic brought by the snowbirds during the winter months - though you'll also need a furnace on every few weeks in December and January!

It depends what area you live, I for one lived in New Tampa, which was where all the new apartments ands tuff are. But it is cheaper to live in a suburb right outside of Atlanta, but look at like rent.com and stuff you can look at different apartments and just use mapquest from their addresses to your husband work address to make sure it's not very far
