This sounds like a simple redox reaction, dressed up to look complicated. Aluminium is higher up the reactivity series than mercury (it has a more negative Eo value) so it will reduce the mercury(II) ions to mercury metal.

2Al + 3Hg2+ ---> 3Hg + 2Al3+
