The weight of the rider is what induces the bull to buck the most. You can tell because after the rider has dismounted/fallen off, the horse or bull slowly stops bucking. What they use to induce them more to buck is a flank strap, which causes pressure, not pain. It is tightened like a girth, in fact. Its pressure is the equivilant to a girth or bit, irritating but not painful. The flank strap has a quick release.
You may hear other people tell you painful methods used to get the bull the buck. This includes binding of testicles (a popular lie spread by certain groups against rodeo), shocking, drugging, beating, burning, tail-twisting, etc. This is not true!
Broncs and bulls actually have very good lives. Their owners keep them fit and provide them appropriate diets (so they can buck). They are only faced with eight seconds of discomfort every so often in their lives.

They have a strap around there flank which is right in front of there back legs which is what makes them buck. The strap is tightened before they come out of the chute and removed when they are done 8 seconds later. Bucking Bulls used for Rodeos have a great life. They make the people money, so they are treated great. The rope is not around the penis of the bull.

Its something as primal as you put a man on an untamed animal and they will do everything in their power to get the man off. No pain is involved. Well not on the animals part. The cowboys on the other hand can get beat up pretty bad. I know animal right activists are constantly on rodeo. But the animals used in rodeo are so well taken care of. They have the easiest life all they have to do is buck somebody off in 8 seconds or less and they get to go back to their buddies in the livestock pen. Plus those animals can run in the tens of thousands or dollars in value often more so livestock contracts will do anything to protect their investment....Plus they love and respect their stock. Ive been around rodeo for years and if you look at the condition of the animals up close and personal like i have you know the animals are in great hands.
