The real reason, if you want the truth... Saddam violated over 27 UN resolutions, and had been for years, after 9/11 Bush went to war with the Taliban to gain a hold in the middle east, justified by the fact the Taliban wouldn't turn over UBL. the plan was to have Afghanistan to the right and gain control of Iraq on the left flank, and with pressure from both sides of Iran, they would be able to control the terrorist state. The protection of Iraq's oil is valid, but we didn't go there just for the oil, it is a necessary action for the economic development of Iraq to have it's resources, not to mention if Iran did control Iraq's oil then Iran would control the great majority of the worlds oil, and that would be used as a weapon against us. WMD's was only one reason of many we went in, and lets be FAIR, everyone believed he had them, even Saddam's own generals, I can't understand why some point to the Oil part, as if stopping a terrorist state from controlling the world oil market, is a "Bad Thing". stop and think it through, what do you think would happen to this and every other economy in the world if Iran was calling the shots. use some common sense please people.

There were actually 3 reasons:

1) Bush wanted to be put in history books as "great" which he figured he had a shot at by being a War President, and was in general gunning for SH. (Well, OK, reason and a half)

2) Cheney wanted to give Haliburton the opportunity to steal huge piles of money in contracts and from oil money.

3) Rumsfeld wanted permanent bases in the area.

Gee, with such great reasons for going in, it's no wonder it's worked out so well!

To protect our oil and economic interests. If you want to read an excellent book that details why and how the American government and corporations invade other countries (especially those in the Third World), try "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" by John Perkins.

Possibly. But please let me throw this one out.

How about ruining the oil supplies for the world.

This nation if willing to take the right course of action can produce plenty of energy with ethanol, I believe we could produce enough to actually export it throughout the world.

That's a lot of corn flakes.......grin

To protect our interests, and those interests are varied. They vary from oil supply, to peace in the Middle East, to safety here at home.

Only the naive would assume we are in Iraq for a single reason...a "smoking gun" if you will.

I guess it could be. I don't keep up with this stuff though. Why do you say that?
I think it's got alot to do with the oil too.
ooops, I'm gonna get a thumbs down there I see. Oh well! Go ahead! I stand by my answer.

The reason is Bush thought it would be a push over and he would be a hero, so much for that!

I'm guessing it is to create a pro-US/UK regime in a very anti-US/UK region of the world that is becoming increasingly militant, and increasingly threatening. Also, the oil rich terrain of Iraq can't hurt
