It depends on the animal.

Alot of times people depict or suggest ALL ANIMALS see in Black & White. This statement is false. Some animals do not see at all, some animals see in only inferred, and many animals have a larger sectrum of sight then a human being. This means they see all the colors you do + more,.. some times 100 times more color and detail then your eyes can see.

There are animals that science can only guess see in only black and white but just seeing in black and white without any other factors is rare. Maybe less rare then a human being born that can only see in black and white but still rare.

Added: Just so all you people answering know. Cats are not color blind. They have a higher spectrum and range of colors. They see many colors beyond our comprehension. Their spectrums includ and expand past inferred and ultraviolet. They are stubborn, so they don't do what you want but they can see color (my female cat's favorite color is green). However it's common for certain problems to exsist amoungst domestic cats from all the inbreding,.. so there are cats born with color blindness and just like a Human their parents and children do not have this problem but are carriers. Cats also have additional senses that we do not have proper words or explainations for,.. a couple that we are learning are their one sense that tells them of things under ground and their ablity to SEE SCENTS. [They also see things more luminated so it's like trying to locate the first color TV avilable to the public or the first film they tried to go back and colorize and compareing it to a brand new Plasma/LCD. The Cats would be the Plasma/LCD and us humans would be the old discolored barely functioning thing.]

the main function of the dog's eyes is to notice minimal movement, especially in dim light, & then to concentrate on it intently.
lateral vision is more important than color, hence their angle of vision is wider (250- 290 degree).human's eye view is 210 degree.
dogs can distinguish between yellow & blue, but they see prodominantly in shades of grey.
