If a cop is behind you and runs your license plate, will they know who the driver is and whether or not their driver's license is valid or not? Or, do they have to pull you over and run a check on the driver's license?

The car tag only tells them the registered owner's info. Anyone could be driving it.

I've heard cops run tags for all kinds of personal info, too. Like the cops best friend is dating some girl who says she can't go out tonight 'cause her cousin is staying with her. The guy wants to be sure it isn't her old boyfriend's car in the lady's driveway. So the cop will run the tag for his buddy. Happens all the time.

When they run the plate they can see who is not suppose to be driving. The car is registered in the name of the owner. When I drove my son's car for the month he wasn't suppose to be driving, I was followed a lot. The police pulled up along side and saw it wasn't a 21 year old male and drove off.

When they drive, they might get a call about a suspect and do random checks on any suspicious car they see. If something is not right, they might pull you over.
