The consumer/customer cannot always be right.

The statement, "The customer is always right" was a saying to remind people not to argue with the customer, because there is no way to 'win' that argument.

With that said; over time the expectations of customers changed, and they frequently had unreasonable requests. If a customer walks into a store and says, "That television that is marked with a price of $3,000.00 will be sold to me for $5.00.", they are clearly wrong.

With that said; reasonable requests that are expected to be accomplished for reasonable compensation, should be taken care of for a customer.

So - if they want to pay extra in a store, but in return for that want to have a live pianist playing soft music, "free" alterations to their clothing, and to have all returns accepted without complaint, then they should be accommodated (so long as they are willing to pay enough to cover the costs involved).

No, normally the consumer is wrong, but the consumer has the money and if the merchant wants the money, he wont argue much
