The best is a short hand saw or a hatchet. I suppose you could use a hacksaw but, it would be kinda flimsy, and the sap from the tree would gum it up. The very best is a chain saw if you have one. I always used a hatchet, though. Remember, when you put it in the stand, chop around the bottom to mush it up. Then pour lukewarm water into the stand. This will hydrate it good. At first, all that water will be soaked up fast, so check it often. Then you can just use tap water daily.

If you cut your own, any saw will do. Cut a third of the way across, then cut the other side to meet it. Then set the bottom of the horizontal tree on the stump, and make a clean cut right across, 1 inch up. If it's not put into water for more than a day, make another fresh cut another inch up from the bottom before you put up the tree. If you buy it cut, just take any saw and make a straight cut 1 inch up before you put up the tree.

A hacksaw will work, but the places I go to cut provide a saw, sometimes a chainsaw.

I wouldn't want to build a log cabin with a hacksaw but for that I'll be fine ,sure.

A hack saw will do it, but a wood saw would be the ideal tool. One of those 75 cm bow saws with large teeth is the preferred tool.
