I notice that when I get very nervous, I get the feeling of literally having "cold feet". I assume this has something to do with blood flow, but what causes it?

its because of you fight or flight mechanism, your body is preparing for something bad or exciting to happen therefor it restricts the blood flow to only the major organs. it quickens the heart rate and breathing. your hands should feel cold too.

Meaning

To 'get cold feet' is to become disheartened or timid, losing one's previous enthusiasm or courage.

Origin

Why this term was coined isn't at all clear. On the face of it there doesn't seem to be any obvious connection with the literal meaning of cold feet and the meaning of the phrase.

There are a couple of citations of the phrase from 1896, including this from Stephen Crane's novel Maggie, a girl of the streets, 1896:

The lack of circulation would create the feeling of cold skin.
Maybe stressed induced constriction of the veins in your lower extremities. Kind of like how constricted muscles in your head create a different sensation: headaches.

Fear. The body has a mechanism to keep the core of the body warm, at the expesne of the extremities. Blood flow is reduced and you get cold feet

Your assumption is right. The cold feeling in an extremity is almost always a sign of poor blood circulation.

Blocked arteries in the legs causes it. The artery has to be opened up in the hospital and then you will probably be on blood thinners. Had this happen in my family. Very easy procedure..
