I got a "friendly reminder" for less than a dollar not once, but twice. It was from a medical bill. Between the time I got the notice and the time I paid it, there was a tiny amount of interest added to it for the unpaid balance. Because it was under $1, for several months their computer didn't send me a statement. Then I got a phone call and a follow up letter in quick succession. I paid the amount (something like 60 cents) the next time I was in the medical building :)

As for your newspaper, I suggest you go with the year in advance if you can afford to. I am always losing the payment notices. I end up wondering if I owe anything, and log on to their site, and find that I do, infact, owe money, which I pay promptly with my debit card. If you cannot afford a year in advance, break the year down into the biggest chunks you can comfortably manage. Our local newspaper offers monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly subscriptions.

And no matter what you do, don't forget to tip the paper carrier!

My friend has been reminding me for the past year and a half that I owe her fifty cents.
I'm not paying her though. It's just FIFTY CENTS. Why does she have to be so CHEAP???????
